Our local liquor store has sales every spring and fall where they blow out a lot of their stock at amazingly low prices. Wineries and distributors are there enforce to pass out samples, the lines are so long they wrap around the inside of the store and reach out the door, and it is a huge party. I missed the first one of these last fall, but this spring Connie and I were able to splurge a little. I bought some aged ports which I either didn't let breath very well or pretty much sucked. Connie had more success with the sweet wines she picked up from the people handing out samples. Danny managed to score some lemonade at the 5 below next door.

Port

Port Wine is a Portuguese fortified wine from the northern provinces of Portugal.

Port had increased popularity because of England’s wars with... well, with just about everyone. With probations against French wines, favorable treaties for the import of Portuguese spirits, and “Port” surviving much better than non fortified wines, Vinho do Porto became much more available.

Porto has several varieties, Ruby, Tawny, White, and Vintage. By preference I drink Tawny port, because I like the depth of flavor.

Wines under $10 with mention of, Jonsey, one of my favorite affordable Ports.

Ports I didn't really care for:

  • Taylor Fladgate 10 year old Tawny Porto (Purchased & consumed 2008)
  • Taylor Fladgate 20 year old Tawny Porto (Purchased & consumed 2008)

I don't know why the Taylor Fladgate's fell so flat for me, but for the price I was pretty offended by what I'd put in my mouth. Both of those bottles should have been tasty ports. Perhaps I didn't allow them to breath enough, or maybe they were just awful. I might try them again once I get a decent decanter.

Me on Mead

Mead, also known as honey wine, is one of my favorite alcoholic beverages. It’s not really wine at all, and is more closely related to flat honey beer, but is classified as another kind of alcohol. I don’t know wine and though I like some wines I find many of them bitter, flat or unfulfilling. Sweet or dry I find mead more appealing than wine.

Wine

I am not much of a wine drinker though I do like sweet wines.

Cider

Cider is my beer of choice.

The cider I'd most like to try is from THE NORTH BRANCH CIDER MILL
North Branch, New York 12766 (914) 482-4823
Supposedly it is one of the last few working mills open to the public.
